Beth and I are over half-way through our intern years in Denver. We have been hitting the slopes as often as possible. I’ve already been up to the mountains 6 times. We are heading out to Lake Tahoe for a week vacation with my family in Feb. We plan to do plenty of relaxing, but plenty of playing in the snow too.

As for living in Denver, we love it! Unfortunately our families are far away, but hopefully they will come out to visit us soon (hint hint). We got the space for sure. Hope everyone is well!

Please don't call me Dr Carewe...make it Adam M.D.

The day officially has arrived. I survived medical school (and a recent marriage) and graduated yesterday at Carnegie Hall with my wife and other classmates. It was a long ceremony, but the highlight (besides walking across the stage and receiving my official degree) was listening to my best friend from medical school, Gregg, give the student address in front of the sellout crowd in the Hall.

Beth and I are now finishing up the rest of the little packing details because we hit the road Sat morning in route to Denver, CO to close on our first home on Tues May 27th! You can check out the photos of the home in the gallery. Needless to say, we are very excited. We have about 1 week to settle into the new home, then we are off to Negril, Jamaica for a week of pampering and fun in the sun at Sandals Resort. Then we get back home in CO, and waste no time starting orientation week for residency. Beth and I matched at the same hospital (Exempla St Joseph) in Denver. Beth is going to complete an OB/GYN residency, and I chose Family Medicine (because I like everything). Our home is only about 5 miles from the hospital so commute time will be a minimum. We are very excited about that.

I hope everyone is well and hope to hear from all of you soon!

Take care,
Adam

Well...we are off for interviews in a couple of days. Our schedule is jam-packed taking us all over the western states in 7 weeks. Beth and I were able to schedule most of our interviews in the same places during the same time. But, since I applied to Family Medicine, there are many more programs in each area, so I have nearly twice as many interviews.

We leave for Utah for two interviews this week. Then, we fly back to Minnesota to spend Thanksgiving with Beth’s family and also complete three more interviews in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. The following week we head back to Colorado (where we spent the month of September) for five more interview. We actually on spending 8 days there, so we should have some free time to enjoy the surroundings...including some awesome snowboarding in the Rockies. And yes...I’ll be toting my snowboarding equipment throughout this interview extravaganza! After Denver, we fly to California where I have one interview in San Jose. Then the following day we are going to head to Sonoma State University for the Humboldt State University basketball game (my alma mater). By this time we are already into December. The next week we fly to Portland for three more interviews then fly immediately to Seattle for four more.

We fly back to Sacramento on Friday December 21, then pack our bags for a week long vacation (and Christmas) on the Mexican Riviera aboard Holland America with my mom. We get back and get to celebrate the new year then finally round out two more interviews in Sacramento before I have to fly back for my January rotation back in NYC! Whew!!!

It is going to be crazy...but hopefully a lot of fun too. Most of the programs we applied to host casual dinners or happy hours the night before each of the interviews, so we should have plenty of fun time too.

After this interview craziness, Beth and I will then have to sit down and really figure out where we want to go. Our rank list is due at the end of February, then national match day is on March 20th! That is the day when we will all find out our fate. It will be an exciting day.

Add a comment if you would like. Hope to see you all soon!

-Adam-

First of all, sorry it has been so long since I have posted an update. Needless to say, 3rd year has been a little busy...but WAY better than the first 2 years of medical school. Anyway, for the updates...and there are many.

Since my last entry I had just finished OB/GYN. Since then I have done my 3 months of internal medicine, 2 months of surgery, and only have 2 weeks left of the 2 months of pediatrics...so yeah, it has been a while. Also, during that time my younger brother, Tyler, got engaged to his wonderful girlfriend, Vanessa, as well as make a little something in her belly. Yep Tyler and Vanessa are having a baby in May. They are both super excited and so it the rest of the family. Hopefully I will be able to get back to CA during my two weeks off in July to meet the little guy (Dylan Haynes Carewe will be his name). Also, my younger cousin, Michael got engaged to his girlfriend, Linnsay, earlier this year...and they are actually getting married 3 weeks after my brother! A busy fall season for our family.

As for some personal news, my girlfriend, Beth, and I are moving into a new apartment in June! We found an awesome place on the Upper East Side in a great location for our 4th year of medical school. “The Penthouse” apartment is breaking up but overall, I think it is a good move. Plus, Beth and I are looking forward to living together before we head off to residency.

Yeah, residency is right around the corner and you will soon have to refer to me as Dr Carewe...or Adam M.D. :) Your choice. So another decision I made recently is to pursue a career in Family Medicine with the possibility of doing a fellowship in non-surgical sports medicine. This past year had been all about finding out what you like and where you want to be in your career. What I realized, is that I want to help treat people as a whole, not just the particular ailment they are suffering from. Also, I want to treat kids and adults. Family Medicine is the perfect fit for that. I’m pretty excited about it.

So Beth and I are going to enter the couple match for medical residency. Basically what that means it that we will match as a pair to a regional area, or in other words, we will match to programs in a similar geographic area based on our rank list. The whole match process is pretty crazy, but basically it is a computer algorithm that places all the medical graduates from a particular year into a residency program based on their preference list and the individual residency programs list of who they want to come to their program. The couples part just links two people together in this process.

So Beth and I are planning to apply to several geographical areas, including: Denver, Salt Lake City, Northern CA, Oregon, Seattle, Minneapolis, and a few others. In Sept I already found out I was accepted to do an away elective in Denver doing a Family Medicine elective at Exempla St. Joseph Hospital. CO is probably going to be our number one choice for local, since it is a great city and also lies about halfway between CA and MN, our two respective home states.

Well, that is about it. After I move into the new apt I’ll post some pics and let you guys know. Talk to you all later.

Well, OB/GYN is officially done! I finished up the six week rotation about a week ago, took the 30 min oral exam, and scored pretty well on the shelf exam (aka a comprehensive written exam written by the board people that we have to take after each rotation). I honestly have to say that I enjoyed OB/GYN much more than I thought I would...especially the surgical side of it. I completed 3 weeks each of the obstetrical stuff, then the gynecology stuff. The OB time was mainly spend on the Labor and Delivery (L&D) floor, as well as 2 days/week in the OB clinic seeing antepartum patients. My duties in OB clinic typically consisted of measuring uterine fundal height (aka how big the uterus is) and searching for the fetal heart sounds with a handheld doppler device. On the L&D floor, as you might have guesses, I spent time delivering babies, both in the delivery rooms and in the operating room (OR). And to answer the question that most of you are probably thinking now...yes, I did get to deliver a baby essentially by myself. It was on one of my 24hr call nights and I was working with the midwife that night. She has 3 of her own patients in active labor and I was apart of each delivery. By the third one, she was pretty confident I knew what I was doing so she let me do pretty much everything. It was pretty sweet. I also got my share of delivering plenty of placentas...both vaginally and in the OR. Speaking of the OR, one of the attending physicians was quite receptive to allowing medical students participate, so he always allowed us to do the final closure of the adipose (fat) tissue and skin with a few sutures followed by a nice row of staples.

As for the GYN side of things, I also did 3 weeks of that. GYN primarily consisted of clinic visits (lots of pap smears and screening for sexually transmitted infections) and lots of time in the main OR for hysterectomies, fibroid surgeries, tubal ligations, and ovarian cyst removal. I got a chance to actually practice using the laprascope during a tubal ligation. The attending gave me 5 minutes to grab the tube with the device while looking at the screen...I got it in about 15 seconds...I guess those many years of nintendo were good for something.

All in all, it was a great rotation...and I can say that OB/GYN is not completely written off as a career option. Now it is on to Internal Medicine for 3 whole months! Stay tuned for IM updates soon.

Take care.
